Officially opened the UNESCO Chair for Sustainable Development

6th of June, 2016 1500 h. in the al-Farabi Kazakh National University (KazNU) will be officially opened the UNESCO Chair for Sustainable Development, which will be held in the university administration building, 15th floor, Al-Farabi avenue, 71, Almaty.

During the joint meeting of the Academic Council and Rectorate of al-Farabi KazNU the agreement between UNESCO and the University will be officially signed, so the UNESCO Chair for Sustainable Development will be assigned to an international UNESCO status. Among the participants at the signing ceremony the General Secretary of National Commission of the Republic of Kazakhstan for UNESCO and ISESCO Ms. A.S. Utegenova, the Director of the UNESCO Cluster Office for Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan Mr. A.S. Shevelev and the Rector of al-Farabi Kazakh National University academician of NAS RK Mr. G.M. Mutanov will be involved. In Kazakhstan, it will be the fifth UNESCO Chair recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Culture Organization.
For several years KazNU has been active in promoting the principles of the UN and UNESCO initiatives on creating conditions for dialogue among civilizations, cultures and peoples. From 2014, the university is the UN Global Hub for the program “Academic Impact” on Sustainable Development. Since 1996 the UNESCO Chair on Journalism and Communication operates in the university, it is carrying out the large-scale projects in the field of media development, journalism and media education.
Assigning high international status to the UNESCO Chair on Sustainable Development will contribute to the more effective promotion of an integrated system of education and scientific research in the field of sustainability research. Fruitful cooperation of the KazNU with scientists from the world’s leading research centers will contribute to the development of a network of universities of the Central Asian region and the creation the regional hub for sustainable development in the framework of the UNITWIN-UNESCO program. This will create the necessary prerequisites for the establishment, together with Columbia University (USA), the Institute for Sustainable Development Studies in Central Asia.
Implementation of projects under this program will give a new impetus to initiatives aimed at supporting the development potential of the country and the region in the field of sustainable development, will help to strengthen the role of Kazakhstan as one of the most important figures in the international process of solving global problems, and maximum use of UNESCO’s potential for the benefit of country and the region. In particular, it is the preparation and support the implementation of research projects on sustainable development, environmental protection, green economy and the transfer of innovative technologies for renewable energy, etc.
International UNESCO Chair will serve as a platform for networking and exchange of knowledge, experiences and best practices. Including on the basis of virtual-communication platform www.greenbridgework.kaznu.kz, organization of conferences, seminars and meetings, as well as the wide dissemination of publications.
