III course in environmental journalism “Conservation and restoration of the ecosystem in Kazakhstan”

On January 24, 2024, at the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, on the initiative of the Ministry of Information and Culture of the Republic of Kazakhstan, with the support of the UN Information Bureau – the Representative Office of the UN Department of Global Communications and the sub-regional office of the United Nations Environment Programme for Central Asia, the III environmental journalism course for journalists on the topic “Conservation and restoration of the ecosystem in Kazakhstan” was held: the influence of mass media and social networks”. The classes were organized by the Departments of Print and Electronic Media of the Faculty of Journalism and UNESCO Chair in Sustainable Development of the Faculty of Geography and Environmental Management of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University. This cycle of courses has been held since 2020 as part of the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding and Cooperation between the Ministry of Information and Public Development of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Al-Farabi Kazakh National University and the Ministry of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The course was held in support of the initiative of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan K. Tokayev on the creation of a Regional UN Hub in Almaty.

The course was opened by L.K. Yerkinbayeva, Member of the Board, Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, who stressed the importance of covering environmental issues and global climate change for the public through the media. The course participants were also welcomed by the expert of the Department of Low-carbon Development of the Department of Climate Policy Meldekul D.E., representative of the UN Department of Global Communications of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Head of the Information Bureau Vlastimil Samek, deans of the Faculties of Journalism and Geography and Environmental Management Kopbaev T.M. and A.S. Aktymbaeva, as well as representatives of other organizations involved. Lectures and practical tasks of the speakers of the event were devoted to the impact of social networks on solving environmental problems, analyzing the results of international partnership for sustainable development. University students from Afghanistan, Ethiopia and Bangladesh shared their experience of interaction between media and ecology in their country. Thanks to the courses conducted, media specialists, students and undergraduates of the Faculty of Journalism have improved their environmental knowledge.
