“Sustainable Development Goals: Our Steps”

On September 28, at the Faculty of Geography and Environmental Management, teachers of the UNESCO chair for Sustainable Development held an event at the faculty level dedicated to the current topic of the Sustainable Development Goals. Students of the Faculty of Geography and Environmental Management took part. It is worth noting that the work was carried out on SDG 4: Quality Education.

The Head of the UNESCO Department for Sustainable Development spoke on the topic “Global initiatives of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University in the field of sustainable development”. Topics such as: UNESCO’s mission and mandate, the history of the UNESCO Chair for Sustainable Development, the scientific directions of the department, as well as the MDP/GLOBAL CLASSROOM PROGRAM on Sustainable Development were discussed. The next topic “Turakty damu maksattary: nakhty kadam” was delivered by the lecturer of the the UNESCO Chair for Sustainable Development A.E. Zholdasbek. and she explained to undergraduate students what the SDGs activities are and why the countries of the world are purposefully working to achieve goals and indicators until 2030 aimed at improving the quality of life of citizens, socio-economic development and environmental sustainability of states.

The invited guest Toktasyn Alisher Zhenisuly, Head of the Emergency Prevention Department, Almaty Department of the State Institution “Kazselezashchita” of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Republic of Kazakhstan, spoke with an important topic regarding SDG 6: Clean water and sanitation. The main idea of the speech is that problems with access to clean water and sanitation entail a deterioration of the economic and social situation among the population, including hunger, poverty, lack of opportunities for education. And also urged the student to treat the environment and natural resources with trepidation.
