II International Winter PR School "Sustainable Development and Communications"

Every year, as part of a political forum in the global community, voluntary reviews are presented on the progress of governments in implementing the sustainable development goals to improve the quality of decisions and develop more effective policies. As President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev noted at the Abu Dhabi Sustainable Development Summit (January 2023): “We have formulated an ambitious but well-thought-out policy that aims to diversify the economy and promote renewable energy and sustainable technologies.”
From February 21 to March 4, 2023, the II International Winter PR School “Sustainable Development and Communication” was held at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University as part of the International Mother Language Day, noted in the list of UNESCO events. The Winter School was organized by the UNESCO Department of Journalism and Communication and the UNESCO Department of Sustainable Development.
The uniqueness of the Winter School lies in the fact that, in addition to obtaining additional knowledge in the field of journalism, the students got acquainted with the basic environmental concepts, the essence and features of modern environmental problems. Studying at this school contributed to the inculcation of the skills of objective analysis and provision of information of an environmental nature, coverage of environmental problems to society, the formation of a holistic view of the principles of resource conservation, environmental management and the “green economy”.
Within 2 weeks, the listeners were given the opportunity to get acquainted with the basic environmental concepts and innovations in solving environmental problems, improve the methodological skills of creating high-quality and reliable textual and audiovisual environmental materials for publication in the media.
Representatives of the media, public relations specialists, university teachers and students, undergraduates and doctoral students from Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Yemen took part in the work of the PR school. As part of the event, master classes were held by representatives of international organizations and well-known PR specialists.
Chairs of UNESCO KazNU named after. Al-Farabi plan to continue holding Winter Schools in order to exchange information, experience and joint interdisciplinary innovative projects in the field of media and sustainable development with specialists.
