TEMPUS
24-25 September 2015 at the Kazakh National University (KNU) named after Al-Farabi and CAREC held the final conference of the project “I-WEB (Integrated Water Resources Management: developing the capacity and influence in the field of education and business) of the European Union Program TEMPUS.
This conference summed up the performance of the three-year EU project in Kazakhstan, performed by a consortium of 15 partners headed by the Middlesex University of London (MU). The Conference:
• provided an opportunity to present the practical achievements of the project in three pilot universities of Kazakhstan: Kazakh National University named after Al-Farabi, Kokshetau State University (KokGU) name Ualikhanov and the International Kazakh-Turkish University named H.A.Yasavi (ICGS);
• demonstrate widespread project in Central Asia through Central Asian Leadership Programme and the web platform of the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC);
• demonstrated experience and good practices of the Central Asian countries in the field of integrated water cycle (IUVTS) and transboundary water cooperation in the region.
Project topics particularly relevant for Central Asian region due to the fact that the issue of water, IUVTS, cross-border cooperation on water issues, access to drinking water, sewage treatment, etc. -. are extremely important for Kazakhstan – the target countries of this project, so and for the entire Central Asian region as a whole. Thus, this project initially as national, in their field, in fact, has become a regional initiative. It gave the opportunity to access to information and educational resources, enhance the capacity of teachers, experts and specialists of both Kazakhstan and all the countries in the region with similar problems in this category, with a clear focus on the need for joint cross-border action.
During the conference, much attention was paid to the international experience and best practices in the field of IUVTS, water policy and diplomacy in the Central Asian region, the role of the International for Saving the Aral Sea (IFAS), represented Middlesex University of London, University of Leipzig, the Technical University of Valencia, University of Cyprus , CAREC, and recognized by international and national experts on cross-border cooperation in the Central Asian region.
A separate session of the Conference was devoted to the experience of the development and implementation of educational programs for IUVTS for undergraduates of Kazakh universities, it has demonstrated experience in international cooperation in the field of ecology interdisciplinarity, IWRM, sustainable development and the new textbook in English and Russian languages in support of this course, which is presented Kazakhstani experts from the treasury of the project, and KokGU ICGS.
Particular attention was paid to the role of young leaders in Central Asia through the connection of this Conference and the Central Asian Leadership Programme, carried out by CAREC from 2010 to 2015. Graduates of the sixth program of leadership held by CAREC, in cooperation with UNEP and with the support of the Government of Norway and the Center of OSCE in Astana, had the opportunity to talk about her role in the development of cross-border cooperation among the five countries of Central Asia and Afghanistan to stabilize the results of the project, and the possibilities of replication of its results in Central Asia.
